INTRODUCTION
‚Noumenal Empowerment‘ (NE) describes a philosophical-political framework, (re-) initiated by the International Senate of World Polity ISWP and edited by NOMOI Iinstitute (partially AI based „ ...“). It is a conceptual synthesis derived from Kantian positions about freedom, autonomy, rational agency, self-determination, and fuses with contemporary theories of power, recognition, and subject formation (inter aliud by Hegel, Marx, Foucault, Palmquist, Forst, Susen, Haugaard).
DEFINITION
- NE means to „understand him/herself as a rational source of reasons, to evaluate reasons, and to determine action on the basis of reasons rather than merely being determined by external, physical or material forces.“ Or: „The transition from being merely a subject of reasons to becoming an author, evaluator, and contestor of reasons.“
- NE is „reflexive, autonomous, recognized, non-alienated, and justificatory agency to regard, constitute, and exercise itself as a self-determining source of reasons, commitments, and action, based on capacity — self-determination — normative agency — resistance to determination ..."
- NE „is the „multidimensional recognition of oneself as a normative agent, to critically evaluate the reasons that govern one's conduct, to resist heteronomous determination, to participate in the justification of shared norms, and to exercise self-determination in relations of recognition with other agents.“
- NE is the empowerment of humanity's capacity to constitute themselves and act as rational, autonomous, normatively authoritative agents, to think beyond the given, determine itself according to reason and ethics, and consciously shape a more legitimate world order, referring to the reclamation of human agency, dignity, and autonomy through the mental frameworks of reason, justification, and moral determiination, rather than merely as objects of externally caused, social, ideological, or political conditions.“
- NE – „the opposite: noumenal alienation = losing/denying one's status as a rational normative authority.“
- „Criticisms of the framework: While highly influential in modern political philosophy, some critical theorists and materialists argue that focusing too heavily on "noumenal" or discursive empowerment is an idealistic trap. Critics suggest that it can depoliticize actual struggles for justice by detaching them from physical realities, such as raw capital ownership, deep economic exploitation, and structural material conditions.“
FUNCTION
- „I acquire or recover the capacity to recognize myself and others as normative authorities and to exercise that authority through autonomous justification.“
- „I can participate in determining, evaluating, contesting, and authorizing the reasons that govern my own action and our shared social life.“
- „I am not merely an object acted upon by causes; I am also a rational agent capable of initiating action according to reasons I give myself.“ The autonomous will is a lawgiving will, rather than one merely conditioned by external causes or inclinations.
- „Power asks: What can I make happen? Freedom asks: Am I determined or self-determining? NE asks a third question: Can I participate in determining the reasons and norms through which my own agency is constituted and exercised?“
- „In opposite to „power over action: I can make you do X” and / or „Power over reasons: I can influence what you regard as a reason for doing X”, noumenal empowerment means: Reflexive agency – Autonomy – Recognition – Non-alienation - Justificatory agency.“
- „The central claim is that the deepest form of empowerment is not merely increased capacity to act within an existing normative order, but increased capacity to participate in determining, evaluating, and contesting the normative order itself. The deepest form of empowerment is not the acquisition of greater power over objects or other persons, but the acquisition of greater normative authority over the reasons by which one understands and governs one's own agency, to participate in determining the reasons by which action is governed.“
- „An autonomous agent is not merely free from external constraint but capable of regarding herself as a source of principles that can authoritatively govern her action. Noumenal empowerment thus names the strengthening or actualization of this capacity for self-legislation.“
- „NE is not liberation from causality, society, or power. It is the capacity to become an active participant in determining the reasons, commitments, and norms through which one's own agency is constituted and exercised … recovering / affirming one's status as a rational normative authority. “
- „Its opposite is not simply powerlessness but noumenal alienation: the condition in which persons are denied, or fail to recognize, their standing as equal normative authorities. Noumenal alienation: I fail to recognize myself or others as normative authorities. Phenomenal empowerment gives an agent the resources to act; noumenal empowerment gives the agent the status and capacity to determine what counts as a reason for acting.“
- NE „refers to the deeper dimension of human agency that cannot be reduced to material resources, institutional position, economic power or political authority. It begins with the recognition of the individual—and, by extension, humanity—as a free, rational and morally responsible source of judgment and action.“
- NE | „core concepts: the space of reasons, the right to justification, deconstructing ideology, trom subject to co-author … connecting noumenal freedom with autonomy, self-legislation, practical reason, moral agency, causality through freedom, kingdom of ends, dignity, free will … noumenal agency = agency considered under the aspect of freedom.“ (This does not mean supernatural power or escape from physical causality, it means a transformation in the agent's normative status and practical standpoint). Free will is tthe a priori normative ground of universal moral laws …“
- NE concerns the agent's status and capacity as a rational, autonomous self-determining subject: the ability to formulate reasons, to evaluate reasons, to reject imposed reasons, to recognize oneself as normatively authoritative, to participate in justification, to determine one's commitments, to resist heteronomous determination ...“
CLASSIFICATION
- „There are two ways of considering the human being: Phenomenally, I am an empirical being shaped by biology, psychology, history, social circumstances, and causal laws. And/or: Noumenally / intelligibly, I am a rational agent capable of determining myself through reason.“
- „Someone can feel extremely powerful while being heteronomous—completely governed by desires, manipulation, ideology, social pressure, or another person's will. Conversely, someone can have very little conventional social power while exercising considerable noumenal agency.“
- „Someone can have phenomenal power without noumenal empowerment: an authoritarian may possess enormous institutional power while being profoundly heteronomous—driven by ideology, narcissism, fear, or social conditioning.“ And again – vice versa - : „NE concerns the agent's capacity to resist heteronomous determination, and participating in the justification of the norms that govern collective life.“
- „Phenomenal (a) vs. Noumenal (b) empowerment: (a) disposes about resources, the capacity to act, wealth, institutional position, social influence, external freedom, efficacy, power over conditions, and (b) has normative agency, capacity to determine reasons, autonomy, normative authority, justificatory power, self-determination, agency, power within the space of reasons …“
- „NE refers neither to escape from causality nor to the possession of greater social power. It denotes the development of an agent's reflexive and justificatory capacity to participate in determining the reasons, commitments, and norms through which her own agency is constituted and exercised to participate in determining, evaluating, and contesting the normative order itself. Its opposite is not simply powerlessness but noumenal alienation: the condition in which persons are denied, or fail to recognize, their standing as equal normative authorities.“
- „NE vs. Domination: Domination occurs when a social order forces compliance through asymmetrical, unjustifiable norms or ideologies that lack reciprocal, general justification.“
- The NE conceptual framework contains societies’ potentials to transform in times of liminality, facing the metanoia point, caused by fading systemic orders, to generate a quantum leap as evolutionary process: From phenomenal power to noumenal empowerment with superiority. The criticism, mentioned as above, is based on a poor or non-integrous „analysis“: Crisis and future transformational processes are not to found on the existing immanence but on the priority of inner human space of intelligibility and noumenality.
- The transformation of regional / world orders „begins not merely by changing institutions, but by empowering human beings as autonomous, rational and responsible authors of the principles by which humanity governs itself.“
- NE reminds and apeals to humans - as an essential high end of evolution – to dispose about the noumenal self empowering driving force to achieve the highest possible standard of just, moral societies in freedom and peace, based on its innate and intrinsic dignity – as rational equals!
- NE starts with the Kantian timeless normativity: „Every rational being must act on a maxim that you would want to bevome unversal law for every member of the Kingdom of Ends!“ The Categorical Imperative, Immanuel Kant.
- NE is the way out of the self-inflicted immaturity and the entry gate to the Kantian "perpetual peace"!
